Head Girl Speech

"Good evening Year 13, parents and families.  I am Lillie, Head girl at the Ursuline accompanied by Renoshni, Deputy Head girl. We are here this evening to celebrate both the achievements of the year group in and out of the classroom – not only the academic achievements which were accomplished in Year 12 but also to reflect upon the many opportunities we were given in year 12.

Over the last 12 months, we have been able to participate in some very enjoyable school trips. We began the year at Wimbledon Bookfest where we attended the Critical Minds Conference and a large number of students volunteered afterwards to help the Bookfest and be able to listen to other talks – such as listening to presenter Graham Norton, philosopher John Grey and children’s author Michael Rosen.

There were 2 Women of the Future events which allowed some students to think about equality and how we as woman can help to make the world a fairer place.

Politics students were lucky enough to go to the House of Lords for the Team Global event.

Several of us were able to go Kings College – not only were many of us awestruck by how huge and beautiful the main entrance was, but the talk from one of UCL’s admissions officers was useful as it enabled us to understand the key aspects to include in a personal statement.

10 students were fortunate to be part of the Advertising Unlocked programme- whereby the advertising industry opened their doors with clients such as BMW, Unicef, Nivea and Levis.

As we began to think about life after Ursuline and to consider what we want to do next, around 60 students headed off to the Universities of Surrey and Southampton. We all participated in the UCAS fair. Some Year 12s were part of the Oxbridge programme which included meeting every Tuesday to prepare for  interviews and write personal statements  as well as  meeting alumni from Oxford and Cambridge and visiting both the universities.

A number of students in the year group have participated in the Medics programme preparing for the challenging yet rewarding opportunity to be accepted into  medical school. Additionally, we were exposed to a variety of careers talks in assemblies with visiting engineers, psychologists, paramedics and economists.

The enrichment programmes have allowed us to develop skills, such as communication, empathy, optimism and confidence. These have included the Guardian’s Young Journalist Programme; students working at Perseid school with disabled children; volunteering at a homeless shelter and helping the elderly at the school’s Silver surfer’s programme. A few year 12s also had the experience of leading the Covent Garden challenge with local primary schools. Some went to engage in art and poetry on a Friday afternoon at Southside House.

In the Sixth form, we learnt about being in a society. Examples of these were: The Garret Anderson medical Society, The Pankhurst History Society and the Cultural Diversity Society.

In the last week of year 12, we undertook our work experience which enabled us to consider what the world of work is like! Placements included: Accenture for 20 students, the Met police and some were able to go back and see their old primary schools as they helped out.

As the Head girl team, we have appreciated the help the year group has offered - particularly the prefects – enabling us to carry out our Mindfulness and environmental projects.

Although, it has been a busy year with the transition to sixth form life, being able to study independently, having closer relationships with teachers and getting used to the differences between GCSEs and A-levels and Btecs – there has been high attainment across the range of subjects as can be seen in the awards this evening.

As we enjoy this evening of success, it can be a slightly daunting time as we begin the last year of the Ursuline, so as the Head girl team says in every assembly, with the quote from Winnie the Pooh:

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
