Victorious at Jack Petchey "Speak Out" Challenge

It was a double whammy on Monday 25th March as Year 10 students Toni A and Sophia B emerged victorious at the Jack Petchey "Speak Out" Challenge Merton Regional Finals.

Toni gained 1st place with her speech "Africa in Three Words.", making her the Merton Regional Finalist for 23-24, with Sophia gaining 3rd place with "Beyond the Numbers," addressing student absenteeism. We are so proud of you both on this very impressive achievement!

Ursuline High School Wimbledon Shines at Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge

Students from Ursuline High School Wimbledon have recently showcased their exceptional public speaking skills at the Merton Regional Final of Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge, affirming the school's commitment to empowering young voices through effective communication. Toni A emerged as the winner, while Sophia B secured an impressive third place, marking a remarkable achievement for both individuals and the school community.

Managed and delivered by Speakers Trust and supported by The Jack Petchey Foundation, Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge stands as the largest public speaking programme in England. It aims to amplify young voices by providing free communication skills training to Year 10 students across London and Essex, reaching over 30,000 participants annually.

In an impressive display of oracy skills, Toni A captivated the audience with her speech titled "Africa in Three Words." Challenging misconceptions about Africa, Agbebi urged listeners to appreciate the continent's indispensable contributions, rich diversity, and inherent power. Her presentation emphasized the importance of recognising and valuing Africa's true essence beyond stereotypes and negativity.

Similarly, Sophia B delivered a compelling speech titled "Beyond the Numbers," addressing the critical issue of student absenteeism. Advocating for empathy and understanding towards students facing persistent absenteeism, Sophia's message resonated with the audience and judges, earning her a well-deserved third place in the competition.

Reflecting on their experiences, both Toni and Sophia expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the Speak Out Challenge. Toni A shared her joy and excitement, emphasizing the importance of passion and dedication in achieving success. Sophia B, despite finishing third, felt like a champion for effectively delivering her message, highlighting the transformative power of turning nerves into excitement.

The achievements of both students highlight the importance of effective communication and the impact of young voices in driving positive change. Through initiatives like the Speak Out Challenge, students are empowered to share their ideas and stories, contributing to education, employability, and social change.
