The start of Advent saw the launch of 'The Year of the Word', across all Catholic schools and churches globally to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Verbum Domini - Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation on ‘The Word of the Lord’. (This also commemorates the 1600th anniversary of death of St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin).
The Year of the Word is a time where we are invited to celebrate, live and share God's word.
At the Ursuline, it was launched through our year group assemblies- focusing on where in the gospel God teaches us to serve. It was further explored in Year 7/8 Advent services and Year 9/10 Reconciliation Services. The focus of our Advent services was the old testament prophacies, students were asked to research and share where in the old testament Jesus' birth was foretold. Together we then pieced together the prophacies to create the Christmas story.
In the Reconciliation Services students used an examination of concience based on the beattitudes to reflect on their confessions. The 'Year of the Word' has also been explored in R.E lessons with students being asked to complete a piece of homeowork on their favourite scripture passage- some fantastic work has been created (see some examples below)- well done girls!
We will be exploring 'The Year of the Word' further throughout the rest of the year.
