A Win For Dementia at Bookfest!

Over 50 of our students in years 8 and 9 attended the Prize winners’ Event at Wimbledon Bookfest on Wednesday 18TH September at which Madeleine (Year 10) was presented with her prize as overall winner of the Bookfest’s competition on the theme “The Island” for her writing on dementia and its isolating effects.

Before the presentation the students enjoyed hearing Malorie Blackman being interviewed by Konnie Huq (ex Blue Peter presenter). She spoke of her determination to succeed as a writer and how many obstacles she had to overcome before she was published. Now the author of over 70 books and having served as the Children’s Laureate, Malorie Blackman is a hugely popular author for young adults who addresses real issues in an engaging and direct way, and the students were thrilled to hear her.

One year 8 student said;

“I enjoyed going to see Malorie Blackman very much. I thought her talk was very interesting and inspirational and I liked hearing all of her stories from her childhood.”

We are looking forward to the next Bookfest event when we take Year 10 students to hear Poet Laureate Simon Armitage on 7th October.”
