From the 6th-9th December, we were very excited to stage the musical Beauty and the Beast in our school Hall. The production is one that we have wanted to stage for many years and so was much anticipated by staff and students alike.

The musical was performed by students from Year 7 to 13, deriving from the much-loved 1991 Disney film of the same name, (with a live acted remake starring Emma Watson released this year). Beauty and the Beast has captured the hearts of generations, and was always destined to be a sell-out! The show featured some of the most well-known Disney songs, including ‘Tale as Old as Time’‘Be Our Guest’ and ‘Gaston’ composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashmen.

The classic tale recounts the story of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman, who is taken prisoner by a beast in its castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the beast and his hideous exterior thus allowing her to recognise the kind heart and soul of the true prince that hides on the inside.

The students had the opportunity to produce the whole musical, as members either of the cast, crew or the orchestra. Young, book-loving Belle was played by Elena (Year 10), Beast/dashing Prince Adam; Kate (Year 12), Arrogant Gaston; Hope (Year 12), Motherly Head housekeeper, Ms Potts; Portia (Year 9), sweet boy-turned cup, Chip; Fancesca (Year7), Butler-turned Candelabra, Lumiere; Bella (Year 9), Head of staff turned, clock Cogsworth; Leah (Year 9) and Opera singer, Madame de Garderobe; Georgia (Year 11).

The whole cast put in a tremendous amount of hours into the rehearsals, which alongside the amazing set, sound and lighting all added up to an extraordinary production. Students performed to not one but three sell out audiences, with standing ovations and positive feedback from parents, governors and other members of our community.

Many thanks to our Performing Arts Department for yet another fantastic production and another thank you to our audience(s) for wanting to ‘be our guest(s)’!
